Ostara - Spring Equinox
The time of “equal night”.
This time of the year is sacred and celebrated by pagans, Neo-pagans, Buddhists, and shinto practitioners. There are parallels in the celebration of new life, awakening, fertility, and prosperity.
During this time we hear of “Ostara” or Eostre , a germanic goddess of spring and the dawn.
Before her we have other divine influences of the spring equinox:
Brigit, still considered the first stirrings and rites of spring, the goddess of changes.
Flora, a roman deity symbolized by flowers and new growth
Sita, a hindu goddess of earth, spring and farming.
Many more exist in the pagan pantheons, but many witches from the influx of Wiccan ideology associate the spring equinox the most with Ostara.
How is this time of year celebrated?
Here are some examples:
Make plans for the coming year! Write tangible and realized goals. Put them into action.
Clean the hell out of your house, yes. Spring cleaning! This doesn’t just mean your physical space, but think of your spiritual and emotional clutter. Remove those obstacles that hold onto stagnant energy.
Herbs, plants, and cooking are attributed to this time. Desserts, herbal teas, and gardening.
Fill your home with fresh flowers, fresh herbs, and laughter.
Have sex!
Do intentional routines that focus on your inner and outer balance. This is the time of night and day being in balance, and so we should do the same. Light and shadow; working in cooperation.
This time of the year can bring new outlooks and opportunities.
Embrace the gifts of the goddess and welcome the new season of the vernal equinox!
May the highest good come of your celebrations and your day.
